In 1927, Wright designed a series of 12 monthly covers for Liberty magazine based on seasonal themes. Unfortunately, the publishers judged them as too radical for the time. The magazine returned Wright’s presentation drawings, which became the basis for later interpretations executed in diverse media. Each cover design exemplifies Wright’s practice of using the tools of his trade—T-square, triangle, and compass—to create lively geometric designs.
Nearly a century later, Motawi celebrates this study in geometry, asymmetry, and color with its 8x8 ceramic art tile inspired by Wright’s Jewelry Shop Window design. This lively composition—a stylized arrangement of necklaces and other adornments—evokes the sparkle of gemstones and pearls through bold linework and intricate detail.
Each Motawi tile is made by hand in Ann Arbor, Michigan with time-honored methods which produce a nuanced range of color with depth and translucence on each design. These hand-crafted tiles may vary slightly in color and dimensions, up to 1/16".
Dimensions: Actual Tile Size: Approximately 5 7/8” x 7 7/8”.
